One of the upstairs bedrooms is our Dutch themed room. First time visitors often enter and see the beautiful art and Delft Blue pottery, only to turn around and be stunned by the main attraction of the room, our collection of wooden shoes hanging on the wall. Over the years in many visits to The Netherlands (as well as visits to countless antique stores around the United States) we have searched for shoes that have a specific personality to add to our collection. While some pairs have the traditional Dutch themed artwork on them, we prefer to collect used shoes that show the wear and tear that comes from the hard work and ingenuity for which the Dutch people are well known. We purchased several shoes from a small shop that sits next to a canal in Delft. It was in that same shop that we found the old Dutch ice skates sitting next to the water pump on the mantle above the fireplace on the main floor.
